Debbie Bookchin
Debbie Bookchin has been a journalist since 1979, winning awards for her news, feature and investigative reporting in the U.S., and spending two years in Germany reporting on political and environmental affairs. In the 1980s, she spent a number of years in Vermont writing for The Rutland Herald and The Barre - Montpelier Times-Argus newspapers, and subsequently for the Burlington Free Press. She has also written for The Atlantic Monthly, Boston Magazine, The Nation, Utne Reader, Chicago Tribune, The New York Times and numerous other publications.


Jim Schumacher
Jim Schumacher is a lawyer and writer, whose work has appeared in The Boston Globe, Newsday, Boston Magazine and The Atlantic Monthly. He has served as the former director of the Vermont district offices of Congressman Bernie Sanders and former Deputy State Auditor for the State of Vermont.



The Virus and the Vaccine is based on an article by Bookchin and Schumacher originally published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 2000. It earned a selection in the HarperCollins book: Best Science Writing 2001. Bookchin and Schumacher are married to each other and have a daughter. They live in Vermont.
